Curriculum Information Years 1-6
At Ainslie Wood, our curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6 is designed to be ambitious, carefully sequenced and rich in knowledge and experience. We want children to develop secure foundations in reading, writing and mathematics, while also building substantial knowledge and skills across the full breadth of the curriculum.
Each subject has a clear progression, ensuring that learning builds purposefully from one year to the next. Children revisit important ideas, deepen their understanding and increasingly make connections between what they already know and what they are learning next. As they move through school, expectations increase not simply through harder activities, but through greater depth of knowledge, independence, vocabulary and sophistication of thinking.
Our coherent curriculum allows subjects to connect where those links genuinely strengthen learning. For example, a historical period may provide meaningful context for art, design or writing, while scientific or geographical knowledge may give children something authentic and worthwhile to communicate. However, we also protect the integrity of individual subjects: connections are made because they add value, not simply for the sake of creating a theme.
We believe children learn best when they understand the purpose behind their learning. Wherever possible, units therefore work towards meaningful outcomes such as exhibitions, performances, presentations, debates, published writing, practical creations or opportunities to share learning with a wider audience. These outcomes give children a reason to draw together and apply the knowledge and skills they have developed.
Alongside academic knowledge, we deliberately develop the qualities children need to become successful learners. In Years 1 and 2, there is a strong emphasis on broadening children’s experiences and developing curiosity about the world around them. In Years 3 and 4, children are increasingly encouraged to collaborate, communicate ideas and take greater responsibility for their learning. In Years 5 and 6, we place a growing emphasis on aspiration, independence, resilience and readiness for the next stage of education.
Our curriculum is enriched through high-quality texts, practical learning, educational visits, visitors and experts, creative opportunities and real-world experiences. We want children not only to remember what they have learned, but to recognise its relevance beyond the classroom.
Throughout Years 1–6, teachers use assessment carefully to identify what children understand, what they need to revisit and where they are ready to be challenged further. Our aim is for every child to experience an ambitious curriculum and to be supported to achieve as highly as possible.
Ultimately, we want children to leave Ainslie Wood as knowledgeable, curious, confident and thoughtful young people: children who can make connections, ask questions, apply what they know and approach new learning with enthusiasm.
