What is Project Based Learning?

At our school, we believe education should do more than help children memorise facts—it should shape how they think, create, and understand the world. That is why we are proud to champion a deeply intentional, Project-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum framework. 

We know that parents want their children to be happy, engaged, and academically successful. We also know it is important to have a rigorous, well-sequenced curriculum that builds deep long-term understanding. By grounding our projects in the latest cognitive science and a knowledge-rich foundation, we deliver on both fronts. 

What Does "Rigorous PBL" Mean at Our School? 

There is a common misconception that project-based learning means letting children run free with cardboard and glue sticks, hoping they pick up some learning along the way. At our school, we do the exact opposite. Our projects are meticulously planned backwards from the national curriculum. We treat cognitive science as our blueprint, balancing active learning with the realities of how the human brain actually processes information: 

1. Knowledge Comes First 

Cognitive science proves that children cannot think critically about a topic if they do not know anything about it. Before a project begins, our teachers deliver direct, explicit instruction to build a robust foundation of core knowledge. A student cannot design a sustainable, flood-resistant model village without first mastering the geography of river systems and the science of materials. 

2. Respecting the Working Memory 

Our brains have a strict limit on how much new information they can process at one time (known in cognitive psychology as Working Memory). If we throw children into an open-ended, unguided task, their brains experience cognitive overload, and learning stalls. 

To prevent this, our teachers heavily scaffold every project. We break complex tasks into highly structured, planned, small steps, providing guided practice and direct feedback at every milestone. 

3. Turning Facts into Dynamic Schemas 

Traditional learning often leaves knowledge isolated. PBL forces children to take the facts they have learned and immediately apply them to solve an authentic, real-world "driving question." This active manipulation of data helps encode the information deeply into their long-term memory, turning isolated facts into flexible, interconnected mental frameworks (schemas).

What the Research Shows 

When PBL is grounded in cognitive science, the educational benefits are extraordinary. Modern educational research consistently highlights several key advantages: 

  • Significantly Higher Academic Achievement: A massive 2023 meta-analysis evaluated 20 years of project-based learning data across hundreds of classrooms. The researchers found that well-structured PBL had a profoundly positive impact on students' actual academic achievement, outperforming traditional lecture-and-memorise models. 

  • Deep, Lasting Conceptual Understanding: In comparative studies tracking STEM subjects, students taught via structured inquiry scored statistically higher on conceptual post-tests than those taught traditionally. Because they have to use their knowledge to build a solution, they don't just remember it for the exam—they retain it for life. 

  • The Blueprint for Higher-Order Thinking: Research shows that setting a meaningful project theme serves as a powerful cognitive trigger. Studies indicate that structured PBL environments can boost children's creative and critical thinking skills by over 30%, while systematically developing systems thinking—the ability to see how different pieces of a big puzzle connect. 

What This Looks Like in the Classroom 

When walking into our classrooms during a project you will see a calm, focused, and deeply purposeful environment: 

  • The Driving Question: Every term, or half term in KS1, focuses on a complex, inspiring question (e.g., "How can we, as local historians, preserve the forgotten stories of our town’s WWII heroes?"). 

  • The Critique Culture: Children learn to give and receive kind, specific, and helpful feedback on their work, mirroring real-world professional collaboration. 

  • Inclusive Environment: All children will be engaged, some with scaffolds to support their learning. Children will be talking and asking questions. Children will be challenged to think deeper. 

  • Making a Difference: Guiding questions ensure knowledge is linked to application but also supports children to reflect on the world around them, both locally and globally. They will discover how they can make a difference.  

  • The Outcome: Projects do not end up in a recycling bin. They culminate in high-quality, authentic products—books, code, models, or presentations—shared with parents, experts, and the community.
