Reading at Ainslie Wood

Our Vision for Reading at Ainslie Wood

At Ainslie Wood, we believe that Reading is at the centre of all learning. We strive for every child to be immersed in the joy and power of becoming a lifelong reader, be ready for the real world and foster a love for literature. We endeavour to provide outstanding, inspiring and exciting reading opportunities and experiences at every stage. It is our mission to bring Reading to life and give it a true purpose. To transform lives and change outcomes for children and communities.

Book Worm of the Half Term

The children are very excited about our half termly prize for being a Book Worm of the Half Term. Each half term every class teacher selects one pupil from their class who has shown excellent engagement and enthusiasm in reading at home and in school.  The winning pupils choose a new book as their prize.

Reading buddies

Our Reading Buddy scheme has been a huge success with each class being paired with another class. The older children have been trained as reading buddies and are fantastic at listening to and supporting their younger peers once a week.

World Book Day

World Book Day is such an important day for us at AWP so we decided to change the day this year as it just wouldn’t have been as fun in lockdown. Each year group enjoyed a range of ‘Author Focus’ activities and of course we had prizes for the best book character costumes.

Leyton Orient Player visit

Last year we were very pleased to have a visit from a Leyton Orient player who talked to some of the children about reading and listened to them read.
